CHICOPEE HISTORY

Founded in 1636, Chicopee ("of cedar")was purchased by William Pynchon from the Agawam Indians and divided into districts.  Originally part of Springfield, it was partitioned and severed in 1848.

Chicopee flourished as industry increased.  Sawmills, Iron foundries, Textile Mills, Waterpower canals, Spalding, Fisk, Duryea, were just some industries and manufacturers that gained global recognition.

Located on the Connecticut River, four highways run through Chicopee's boundaries, i.e., I-90, I-91, I-291, and I-391.  State routes such as Route 33, 116, and 141 run through its boundaries as well.

Chicopee is 23.9 square miles and has a population of 55,991.  Its zip codes are 01013, 01020, and 01021.  It is bordered by Holyoke to the northwest, West Springfield to the southwest, Springfield to the south, Ludlow to the east, Granby to the northeast and Sourth Hadley to the north.  It is located 29 miles from Harfrod, 89 miles from Boston, 90 miles from Albany and 130 miles to New York city.  

CHICOPEE CULTURE

The many Chicopee annual and seasonal events include:  The Great New England Air Show is an annual two day air show held at Westover Air Reserve Base.  It typically attracts over 300,000 visitors.  The Sword Game is an annual football game held every fall between Chicopee High School and Chicopee Comprehensive High School.   The winner is presented with the Mayor's Sword - manufactured in the 1890's by Ames Manufacturing.

Elms College, fifteen public schools, multiple private elementary and private secondary schools make Chicopee their home.  MGM, Mercy and Baystate Hospitals, Western New England University, American Internal college, Elms college, Springfield College, and Mounty Holyoke College are a short distance away!  


Westover Air Force Base, Buxton, the Wall Street Journal, Calloway are located in Chicopee as well as numerous other employers.
